Peer Learning Assistant

Position Overview

Pay Rate: $13.15/hr

Peer Learning Assistants (PLA) provide individualized academic assistance in courses working 6-10 hours per week. We invite academically inclined students from ALL STEM fields to apply with a particular interest in tutors who can support core courses in the following areas:

  • No current course needs at this time

Note: Graduate students are ineligible to work as a PLA unless they completed Undergrad at Missouri S&T

Requirements

  • Must have received a letter grade of B or above in courses you wish to mentor in
  • Must have taken the courses at Missouri S&T [cannot be transferred in or from previous institutions]
  • Must be an undergraduate student
  • Ability to attend required Monthly Staff Meetings
  • Must be able to mentor 3 or more classes
  • Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Able to work with individuals or a small group of students
  • Have a deep understanding of the course material

Success Coach

Position Overview

Pay Rate: $12.15/hr

SSC Success Coaches provide individualized academic coaching to students covering various topics, such as study skills and time management. Coaches represent the SSC at various events and are the first contact with students entering the SSC. Other duties include the following:

  • Working shifts at the SSC front desk with some weekends and evening events as required.
  • Welcoming students, families, staff, and faculty as they enter the SSC
  • Answering the phone and other questions
  • Maintaining a high knowledge of available resources on campus and referring students to other campus departments, which may include walking students to the appropriate office/building
  • Daily administrative tasks and general upkeep of the SSC
  • Assist in tracking and recording keeping of the daily usage of the SSC
  • Cultivating a supportive and enthusiastic environment within the SSC. 
  • Monitoring student check-ins and managing records. 
  • Encourage students to utilize the services provided by the SSC through different promotional events
  • Work 6-10 hours/week.

Requirements

  • Outgoing personality with a passion for helping others
  • Adhere to a strict schedule and maintain punctuality for all shifts. 
  • Communicate effectively to convey various concepts and strategies. 
  • Ability to attend required Monthly Staff Meetings
  • Be knowledgeable about campus resources to aid students. 
  • A willingness to perform daily administrative duties to maintain the SSC’s operational standards.
  • Expected to support no less than 2 SSC programs, Admission’s Open House days and other cross-department collaboration opportunities throughout the semester (which may occur after hours or on weekends).
  • The capacity to help create and find resources to be used for academic coaching.
