Description

Peer Learning Assistants (PLAs) provide personalized academic support across a variety of courses through multiple tutoring modalities. They may engage in Drop-In sessions, offering one-on-one assistance, participate in Group sessions, where they work with students in varying numbers alongside faculty, or support Supplemental Instruction (SI), embedding themselves in a course and leading additional sessions outside of class to reinforce learning. 

The ideal candidate will offer individualized student support by working closely with students to deepen their understanding of course material. They will apply active learning strategies, such as facilitation and collaboration techniques, to promote peer engagement. Additionally, they will foster a welcoming and supportive environment, ensuring students feel comfortable seeking help. The candidate should also demonstrate content expertise, maintaining a strong grasp of course material and utilizing class resources effectively to enhance student learning.

Pay Rate: $13.15 per hour

Availability: 6-12 hours per week

Qualifications

Academic Requirements: Candidates must have completed the courses they wish to tutor at Missouri S&T, earning a B or higher, and must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.9–3.0 or higher. A faculty recommendation is also required. 

Flexibility in Tutoring Support: Tutors must be adaptable and willing to support any tutoring modality as needed to address gaps in coverage each semester. This flexibility ensures students receive the help they need while also providing tutors with opportunities to expand their experience and potentially increase their working hours. 

Drop-in Tutoring: Provide support for at least four courses, including core major courses as well as any of the following: Calculus I–III, General Chemistry I-II, and College & Engineering Physics I–II. 

Group Tutoring: Confidently lead sessions for groups of students while maintaining open communication with faculty to stay informed in order to provide relevant and effective support. 

Supplemental Instruction (SI): Attend course lectures to stay up to date with content. Meet regularly with faculty to discuss student progress and course expectations. Establish connections with students and promote SI sessions. Host up to three 1-hour support sessions per week for the assigned section. 

Administrative & Professional Development: Attend required meetings to stay informed on best practices, tutoring techniques, and SSC update

We invite academically inclined students from ALL fields to apply with a particular interest in tutors who can support core courses in the following areas: PhysicsCiv. Eng., Chem/Chem Eng. Mech. Eng. and Computer Science for Group and Drop-in Tutoring.

Position Overview

Success Coach 

SSC Success Coaches provide individualized academic coaching on study skills, time management, and goal setting while serving as the first point of contact for students entering the SSC. They create a welcoming environment, connect students with resources, and represent the SSC at campus events.  

 

The ideal candidate effectively manages their own academic responsibilities, demonstrates strong time management skills, and serves as a role model for peers, exhibiting high levels of academic achievement and engagement. 

Pay Rate

$12.15/hour with potential to increase with time served. 

Availability

Coaching: 6–10 hours per week 

Mentor Collective: 6 hours per month

 

Requirements

  • Front Desk Management: Serve as the first point of contact at the Student Success Center (SSC), welcoming students, families, faculty, and staff. Aid by answering questions, offering guidance, or referring visitors to appropriate campus departments. 

  • Tracking & Record Keeping: Assist in monitoring and maintaining records of daily SSC usage, including student check-ins. 

  • Administrative Support: Perform daily administrative tasks to ensure the SSC operates efficiently, including general upkeep of the space. 

  • Workshop Facilitation: Plan and lead group workshops focused on soft skills development. 

  • Campus Outreach & Presentations: Present SSC services to first-year department introductory classes and Fraternity Sorority Life (FSLs).

  • Success Coaching: Provide peer-to-peer coaching to help students develop strategies for academic success, time management, goal setting, and personal growth. Guide students in identifying challenges and implementing effective tactics to improve their coursework and overall well-being. 

  • Mentor Collective (MC) Participation: MC is a student engagement platform that helps first-year students feel supported by pairing them with successful upperclassmen mentors. As a mentor, you'll be expected to engage with your assigned mentees for up to 6 hours per month. These regular interactions help first-year students stay connected to campus life, build meaningful relationships, and navigate their transition to college more successfully.

  • Resource Referral: Maintain a strong understanding of campus resources and actively connect students with appropriate services, which may include escorting them to relevant offices or buildings.

  • Student Engagement & Promotion: Foster a welcoming and supportive environment within the SSC. Encourage students to take advantage of available resources by participating in outreach efforts such as tabling events, Admissions & Recruitment (A&R) Days, Open House, and the Miner Welcome Bash. Some evening and weekend event participation may be required.

  • Staff Training & Professional Development: Attend staff training sessions to stay informed about SSC updates, campus initiatives, and best practices for supporting students effectively.
